Barbara Taylor’s Connection with Clay

Posted in Artisan Products, Artisan Stories, Video by Indra | Email Email

Barbara Taylor is a talented potter specializing in the use of red clay. I met her at One-of-a-kind-show and absolutely fell in love with her work. I got to know her a little more when I interviewed her for this segment and was deeply moved by her personal story. Her meticulous research in the methods and uses of clay are evident in her work and story. LifeSpices is proud to introduce Barbara Taylor as the first artist in our series of Artisan Stories and her work will be available for purchase on our recently launched marketplace starting May 28th, 2007.

To celebrate this launch we are hosting a Father’s Day (June 17th) contest.

Post a comment here telling us why Barbara’s hand-made terra cotta wine cups is the perfect gift for your father or if you are a father then tell us why you think these would be a special gift for you, and we will enter you in a contest to win a set of four 4 oz wine cups. Please read the rules of the contest, by clicking here.

Hear Barbara Taylor’s motivational journey with clay, please click on the play button on the video below and get inspired! The video approach is a bit accidental, I had my notebook with me and took my handycam as a last minute thought. As we started the interview , I was taken by her expressive style and asked if I could just roll the video tape and so here it is my first video production… (…it is about 10 minutes so fill-up your coffee or tea, relax and enjoy!)

These wine cups would be great for a father because they have a great masculine feel to them. Yet they are not so masculine that he couldn’t share with his wife. A great Father’s Day gift!

I would love to give these wine cups to my father. What an incredible story this woman has. I was just touched by it. Not only would I be giving my father this wonderful gift for father’s day, but I’d also be sharing this amazing story with him. Drinking wine from these cups is like having a little cup of inspiration. Barbara Taylor reminds me that when you follow your heart, and the signs that you are shown, anything is possible.

  22. Rob Mizzi says:

Barbara’s hand-made terra cotta wine cups is the perfect gift for my father because their brilliant colour is popular in his home country, Malta. My father grew up in a small fishing village, and although he felt that fishing wasn’t his favourite hobby, he enjoyed being with his father as he fished in a colourful, traditional rowboat. When they immigrated to Canada, my grandfather needed to work in Toronto, and gave up fishing. But never stopped making wine, a Maltese tradition. This gift will bring my father (and me!) back to his ancestral roots, and resurrect legacies that we carry with us.

  23. veronica says:

I would love to present these to my dad this father’s day. Being european, it would give him the opportunity to look back at his childhood and young adulthood in Portugal, where he was raised with his parents cooking with clay bakeware and drinking from clay cups. What better way to enjoy a glass of fine european wine than in a european inspired drinking glass.

  40. Linda M says:

They are absolutely beautiful in their simplicity. My husband ( father to my kids ) would love these because he’s a stone sculptor and feels with his hands. The eyes don’t always have to be used to appreciate artistry in its many forms-these cups are an example of that philosophy.

  41. Shawna. Lawford says:

  44. Lindsey Moorhouse says:

Hello, I would like to add this post for my father. He is an avid wine-maker from Labrador, using the native vegetation and what he can grow in the garden to create his wines, some of the wines include redberry, blueberry, strawberry and gooseberry. We only get to enjoy them when we manage to get home for the occasional christmas, but they sure are good.

  46. Larry Sibley says:

Barbara’s story of how she found her vocation of making wine cups exemplifies the spiritual perspective that there is another higher level of reality of purposeful and fateful forces acting upon and guiding a person’s life. The cups themselves have a fine energy about them - a magical chalice quality, like a grail quest chalice from which an Arthurian knight would sip some transformative elixir. And what father would not appreciate that this unique cup neutralizes a red wine’s capacity to induce a headache?
