My dedication and effort to achieve excellence and to help those around me excel have been inspired by my Bahá’í faith.”
Fariba Heydari is the new artist featured this month. Her 100% wool Alpaca shawls are featured in our marketplace. Born in Teherán, Iran, Fariba Heydari came to Arequipa in 1981 with her parents and brothers. Not knowing Spanish and unable to return to Iran for religious reasons, she was hired by a textile company because of her knowledge of English. She soon began to train as a designer. “I loved creating new designs and models,” she confides. It seemed like a dream that a passion of mine could become my life’s work.
“In 2003, I launched my first collection of hand-loomed shawls, working in conjunction with weavers in Cuzco, Puno and Arequipa. The experience was amazing. Their technical skill and their devotion to their art resulted in the strong working relationships we have today. Currently, some 30 families collaborate with me.
“I am fortunate to live in Peru with its array of fine natural fibers such as alpaca and vicuña wool. I’m able to experiment with new and different ideas, and my designs are widely appreciated in Peru and beyond our borders.
“My dedication and effort to achieve excellence and to help those around me excel have been inspired by my Bahá’í faith. In each of my collections, our principle of “unity in diversity” is the basis of my creativity.”

Barbara Taylor is a talented potter specializing in the use of red clay. I met her at One-of-a-kind-show and absolutely fell in love with her work. I got to know her a little more when I interviewed her for this segment and was deeply moved by her personal story. Her meticulous research in the methods and uses of clay are evident in her work and story. LifeSpices is proud to introduce Barbara Taylor as the first artist in our series of “Artisan Stories“ and her work will be available for purchase on our recently launched marketplace starting May 28th, 2007.
To celebrate this launch we are hosting a Father’s Day (June 17th) contest.
Post a comment here telling us why Barbara’s hand-made terra cotta wine cups is the perfect gift for your father or if you are a father then tell us why you think these would be a special gift for you, and we will enter you in a contest to win a set of four 4 oz wine cups. Please read the rules of the contest, by clicking here.
Hear Barbara Taylor’s motivational journey with clay, please click on the play button on the video below and get inspired! The video approach is a bit accidental, I had my notebook with me and took my handycam as a last minute thought. As we started the interview , I was taken by her expressive style and asked if I could just roll the video tape and so here it is my first video production… (…it is about 10 minutes so fill-up your coffee or tea, relax and enjoy!)
