Day 7 – Instructions for Life by the Dalai Lama in a Kampala Office

I spent a few hours in the Chandarana’s office watching the daily hustle and bustle that Harsha and Bharat cope with. Harsha shows me a cartoon drawn by their 17 yr old daughter, Ami, titled “Day to Day Life”. It is hilarious and true in many ways. Ami has been going to school in England since the age of 12 and she sees her parents during the holidays and spends many days in the office with her parents when she is in Kampala.

I found these Instructions for Life by the Dalai Lama posted in both the Chandaranas offices.

  • Take into account that great love and achievements involve great risk.
  • When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.
  • Follow the three R’s: Respect for self, Respect for Others and Responsibility for all your actions.
  • Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.
  • Learn the rules so you know how to break them.
  • Don’t let a little dispute injure a great friendship.
  • When you realise you have made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.
  • Spend some time alone everyday.
  • Open your arms to change, but don’t let go of your values.
  • Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.
  • Live a good honourable life. Then when you get older and think back, you’ll be able to enjoy it a second time.
  • Loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your life.
  • In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation – don’t bring up the past.
  • Share your knowledge, it’s a way to achieve immortality.
  • Remember that the best relationship is one which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other.
  • Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to to get it.
