Serena Lodge

Posted in General, Travel & Adventure by Indra | Email Email

After the hearty breakfast, we are ready for some quiet relaxation. We meet Leonard the local Masai who is a lecturer at the lodge. His role at the Lode is to provide tourists with information about the Masai people and culture and in the local community provide education on important issues like the socio-economic benefits of monogamous relationships and Family Planning for those still practicing polygamy and there are many.

Aids awareness and the use of condoms is a critical and central part of his contribution to the local community. There are 2 M people infected with Aids in Kenya of the 32 M population. The Masai represent 1.2M of the total population and the infection rate is 0.01. The main reason is that the Masai do not encourage cross-cultural movement and tend to stay within their own tribes.

Our Guide meets us at the lodge late afternoon. He does not look very happy and decides to unload his opinions on World Trade on us. Whatever! We are ready for our evening game drive, which is just breathtakingly beautiful.

Another night awaits us at Amboselli. Yes! We have a campfire. David, the Masai joins us at the campfire engaging us in stories and myths about his people and culture. He has wise insights into nature, animals and life in general. The ground seems harder than the night before and I barely sleep, feeling tired, restless and insecure while trying to gauge the nearness of animals every time I hear a noise.
