The Story of 10 year old Danjani Zacharia
AIDS in Africa cannot get enough coverage to demand world attention. Dhanjani Zachari’s story in Tuesday, October 18th issue of Global and Mail as reported by Stephanie Nolen is enlightening and heartbreaking. It deserves every inch of the front page.
Stephanie Nolen’s report is compelling and highlights the lack of action or insufficient funding by leading nations, like US and Canada. I had my 14 year old read the article aloud while I made dinner… Dhanjani is the sole guardian of her 2 year old sibling who is suffering from Aids and weighs no more than 5 Kg. She has not eaten in two weeks but her eyes in the picture on the front page are full of hope.
She walked six hours with her little brother, Ali on her hip to get to the nearest hospital. This is the plight of many children in Africa who have lost their parents to AIDS. Compounding the issue in Malawi is the drought that has stricken the region. The prospects for getting aid to Malawi are grim, though! Most of these children will die before aid gets there. Major intervention is required to get aid in Malawi to save Danjani and other children. Is anyone listening?
